Writer's Wish... Blog

This is a writing class for students who already have a passion for story telling, journaling, list-making, doodling and otherwise putting pen to paper. Writers will be provided a number of writing experiences which will include imaginative prompts, "fill in the blank" (with no right or wrong answers, of course), experiential, focused or open-ended inspiration.

Hawaii...

Hawaii Nonsense

I love the beauty of the small island. The journey from the plane was quite a climb. The smell of the fire was sweet in a way. It makes you desire a sandwich.

The flower is gone, the sun is gone too. I can't think. What do I do? Should I run away? Why do I feel like a prisoner? I feel guilty now. What do I do? I have so much that I need to do right now. I don't have the freedom I need to write with. The rain, the rain it gives me headaches during the cold hard winters. The flowers are gone, no flowers for inspiration. No sunshine to look at, no freedom for what I want to do, no nothing. Pictures won't do it, I need to look at the real object in order to see it and use it for inspiration. I feel captured, I cannot go on. What do I do?

The inspiration for this was a Hans Christian Anderson quote. "One must have sunshine, freedom and a little flower."

Hope

Hope is like a race waiting to be run,

Hope is something to find in a sunrise

Whispering to you throughout the day,

Hope is a river rushing in the forest,

Hope is something full of life,

Hope is something full of life,

Hope is somewhere...

Hope is here.

Love

Love will descend like

A dove and land on

Someone’s shoulder

Soon a secondary dove

Will tumble down and

Find another someone’s

Shoulder

While on a little

Walk the two

Of them will meet,

And fall into an amazing

World...

Misc.

This past week, a few people shared what they'd written during the week.

And this is a list of the writing exercises:

Who are you? And why? Start writing "I am..." if your hand stops writing.

Poetry
An excerpt from Nationally esteemed poet St. John...
"The answer to everything
is a just peace
(So we elected him President)
Or better umbrellas
That are not afriad" - from "Our Lady of Congress, " in Communion: Poems, 1976-1998

Using the poem, consider the answer to everything and write.

Images of summer - list 5, choose most vivid and write.

"I want to tell the story of..."

"I walk through the rooms of memory." Excerpt from How to Bless the day by Marge Piercy. Write "I remember..." if you hand stops writing.

Last exercise - good deeds, good words and good food.

This class

This class will include exercises for inspiration.

There will be 3 minute writes, where the only goal is to keep the hand moving, a practice I learned about from Natalie Goldberg, Linda Barry, Anne Lamott, Derrick Jensen, etc., etc., etc.

There will be sentence starters and finishers.

Myth and belief and faith will be explored by each individual according to their personal culture.

Word play will challenge us all to find new ways to express familiar imagery.

Poetry forms will become the writer's friend.

Writers will have the opportunity to meet their own muse.

The Rose and the Coffin

The rose lay upon the ground forgotten over time as the world around it had grown. The coffin that lay underneath it, was weathered and old. The world that the body in the coffin had known was long gone. Surrounding it was a new world that, like the old one, would soon be lost. - Katie
