Science Studies for 4th/5th Blog

Develop understanding of the variation in living and nonliving things, how they are classified, and their interaction with energy and forces. Explore physical properties of the states of matter and how forces affect an object’s position, motion, and speed. Investigate the life cycles of plants and animals and their interaction with the environment. Study fossils and discover what they can reveal about living things long ago and now. Study Earth’s relationship with the sun and the moon and learn how it affects weather and tides. We will practice scientific inquiry as we make observations, form hypotheses, plan simple experiments, and collect, organize, summarize, analyze, and interpret data.

Hello from John

What a great place! I started the fall term with three classes and ended the term with seven. In the winter I will be teaching fourteen classes! The science classes have been a great experience for me and I hope you have found the change to be positive. I put a heavier emphasis on talking about the science and lightened the amount of hands on activity. Were about half and half right now which I feel is the best mix to keep the kids learning while having fun. I didn't follow the original syllabus, instead we covered the topics: Simple Machines, Liquid Density, Molecules and Atoms, Sound, and ended with Light.
During the Winter we will switch to Earth Science and cover:
Seasons, Water Cycle, Weather, Oceans, Plate Tectonics, Erosion, The Globe, Mapping, Volcanoes, Rocks.

Please bring to class tomorrow

Please bring a very small toy. Something along the lines of a lego man, or very small action figure or very small stuffed animal. Think of the size of item that might hang from a key ring. Also, this is optional - you might want a piece of fabric. If you bring it, it should be squarish in size and between 6" on a side - to bandana-sized. We are making parachutes tomorrow!
