Village Home began in 2002 when Lori Walker and a group of homeschooling families came together with a vision: creating a supportive community for their children. After months of planning, we launched classes in fall 2003 as an alternative to traditional public education, serving 200 homeschoolers in the greater Portland area.
Initially partnering with the Beaverton School District, we expanded our reach in subsequent years to include Portland, Hillsboro, Forest Grove, and Tigard, accommodating students from various other districts as well. Offering around 80 classes weekly and organizing 130 field trips annually for homeschoolers aged 5-18, we quickly gained popularity.
By the end of our second year, changes in the political climate and increasing budget pressures from districts led us to reevaluate our approach. In summer 2005, Village Home restructured as a tuition-based private program. This shift allowed us to create an innovative space focused on enhancing learning in a community setting, while maintaining flexibility for our families and learners.
Since then, we have continued to grow and diversify our programs, catering to homeschoolers, charter school students, and other independent learners. As a private program, Village Home is committed to providing engaging educational opportunities that align with our core values of self-directed learning and community connection.
Recognizing families as the primary educators, Village Home strives to support their homeschooling journey, making it easier and more enriching. Over the years, we have solidified our role within the education reform movement, continually refining our approach to meet the evolving needs of learners and families.
In the fall of 2023, Lori Walker stepped down from her role as Executive Director and we welcomed Brandi Kujala as the new ED of Village Home. Under Brandi’s leadership, we continue to serve the growing population of learners seeking a different education path. We are a community that comes together to spark curiosity, learn with joy, and grow together.
